  • Mental health refers to psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Mental illnesses affect a person’s mood and how they feel, perceive, and behave. 
  • Substance use is defined as excessive drug or alcohol consumption that affects mental and physical health. Alcohol in excess can contribute to heart disease, some forms of cancer, risky sexual behavior, and accidents.

  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year
