U = U means “undetectable equals untransmittable.” More specifically, it means that people living with HIV who have an undetectable level of virus in their blood due to treatment are unable to transmit the virus to others.
For people who do not have HIV, there is a once-a-day pill called PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) that provides ongoing protection. PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is for emergency situations only and must be taken within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV. Condoms protect against most STIs, including HIV.
