HealthyBR's Ask the Expert on World AIDS Day and HIV

Know Your Status: Approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. have HIV. About 13% (156,000) of them don’t know it and need testing. Earlier diagnosis leads to more successful treatment, so getting tested and learning your HIV status is crucial to your health.Click here to find a test near you!

U = U means “undetectable equals untransmittable.” More specifically, it means that people living with HIV who have an undetectable level of virus in their blood due to treatment are unable to transmit the virus to others.

For people who do not have HIV, there is a once-a-day pill called PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) that provides ongoing protection. PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is for emergency situations only and must be taken within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV. Condoms protect against most STIs, including HIV.

We all have a part to play in ending HIV!
